GTA 6 vs GTA 5: What's Actually New

By Console By The Hour ·

GTA V launched in September 2013. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 — a 13-year gap, the longest between mainline entries in the series' history. Here's what's actually confirmed to change, based on Rockstar's own reveal materials.

Setting

GTA V was set in Los Santos, a fictionalized Los Angeles. GTA 6 moves to Leonida, a fictionalized Florida built around Vice City — the series' first return to that city since 2002's Vice City and its 2006 remaster.

Protagonists

GTA V ran three playable protagonists (Michael, Franklin, Trevor) you switched between at will. GTA 6 centers on two leads, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, in a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style narrative — a structural shift, not just a headcount change.

Technology

GTA V (2013)GTA 6 (2026)
Console generationCross-gen (PS3/360, then PS4/Xbox One)Current-gen only (PS5, Series X|S)
World simulationSingle city + countrysideDenser city, live NPC systems, weather cycles
EngineRAGE (2013 build)RAGE (rebuilt for current-gen)

Being current-gen only (no last-gen console version to hold it back) is arguably the biggest technical shift — it's why GTA 6 looks so far ahead of GTA V despite using an evolution of the same engine.
